Orthopedics · Orthodontics · Airway-Centric Dentistry
Dr. Som Gupta brings over four decades of experience in comprehensive, airway-focused dentistry — blending advanced training in maxillofacial orthopedics, functional orthodontics, and oral-systemic wellness.
Now collaborating with his son, Dr. Samir Gupta, he offers select care focused on helping both children and adults achieve healthier, more functional lives through integrative, non-invasive treatment.
A Foundation in Dentistry, Built Globally
Dr. Gupta began his dental career at Punjab Government Dental College in Amritsar, India, earning his degree in 1974. He completed a one-year hospital residency in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery at Irwin Hospital in Delhi, before moving to the United States in 1976.
In 1978, he earned his Diploma in Clinical Dentistry from the University of Pennsylvania School of Dental Medicine in Philadelphia, and soon after became Dental Director at Primary Care Health Services in Pittsburgh.
A Lifelong Commitment to Advanced Education
In 1981, Dr. Gupta opened his private practice in Verona, PA, where he began incorporating functional orthodontics and maxillofacial orthopedics into his care — long before these were widely understood in the dental field.
Introduced to the field by Dr. Skip Truitt, Dr. Gupta has since completed over 2,500 hours of advanced training with globally respected clinicians, including:
- Drs. Brendan Stack, Harold Gelb, John Witzig, William Clark, Derek Mahoney, Dave Singh, Brock Rondeau, and Pankaj Singh.
These studies shaped his integrative approach — bridging orthodontics, TMJ, craniofacial development, and airway health into a unified treatment model. He has also worked alongside medical colleagues like Dr. Raj Kapoor, M.D., to align dentistry more closely with modern medicine.
Reigniting a Passion for Airway-Centric Care
After affiliating with Heartland Dental in 2013 and taking a brief step back from clinical practice in 2018, Dr. Gupta’s passion for orthopedic and orthodontic care was reignited through his ongoing collaboration with Dr. Samir Gupta.
Together, they revisited Dr. Truitt’s philosophy and were introduced to Dental Compass™, a precision diagnostic system developed by Lourens Alexander duPreez. This tool deepened Dr. Gupta’s ability to assess TMJ imbalances and craniofacial dysfunction with enhanced accuracy — further elevating outcomes for his patients.
